Thrive Dog School serves as a virtual space for service dog handlers to learn the nuances of navigating the world while training for a reliable partnership. We focus on building resilience and confidence in both dog and handler by offering a blend of technical training, continuing education, community classes, and Guided Puppy Raising.
Our support is designed to meet you at any stage of the journey—from the early days of raising a prospect to the specific needs of a seasoned, working team. We believe every partnership deserves a steady foundation of expertise, which is why we welcome and support owner-trainers and program-handlers alike. Regardless of how your dog was acquired, or what your disability is, you have a place here.
Our vision is rooted in the deep co-evolution of our two species. We view dogs as a highly sophisticated partner, on that was refined for over 12,000 years to assist, protect, and provide life-changing support. At Thrive, we recognize that a well-matched and well balanced dog is often the key to a more accessible and expansive life for their handler.
We work toward a future where at the foundation of a service dog team is a quiet, intuitive language between us and our 4-legged partners. Our goal is to see more teams move through an unpredictable world with a genuine sense of ease. One where the dog’s capability and the handler’s confidence grow in tandem, allowing both to navigate life with more freedom.
Building a service dog partnership involves a steady connection at both ends of the leash. For the handler, we utilize a trauma-informed framework to help the training process feel sustainable and approachable. This includes working hand in hand with occupational therapists to adapt methods for those with mobility or dexterity needs, ensuring that every task and tool is functional for your specific physical realities. Our choice to work virtually supports this goal by allowing us to coach you within your own environment, reducing the physical and sensory strain often associated with travel and traditional training settings. This format allows us to address the real-world scenarios you encounter in your daily life while keeping both you and your dog in a space where you feel most capable. For the dog, we rely on reward-based practices that prioritize canine psychology and behavioral science. Our approach is guided by LIMA (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive) principles and ADI (Assistance Dogs International) standards to maintain professional and ethical benchmarks. From the early stages of Rooted Beginnings to the daily complexities of working in public, we provide the expert support needed to navigate the unique path of a service dog team.
Brenna has spent over twenty years refining the nuances of high-level service dog partnerships. Her experience in the field began at age fifteen, when she began raising Guide Dogs for the Blind, which established a deep foundational understanding of the behaviors required for a successful working life. This long-term perspective allows her to provide handlers with a steady, highly experienced level of guidance and support.
Before founding Thrive, Brenna spent 15 years as a professional trainer, 7 of those years at Freedom Service Dogs, an ADI-accredited organization. During her tenure, she developed and managed a comprehensive lifetime support program for over 200 active service dog teams. Her work required her to fly nationally to provide direct field support, navigating the real-world complexities of travel, public access, and specialized task training. She was the lead instructor and curriculum creator of FSD's 2-week placement class. She has performed hundreds of Public Access Tests and service dog behavior evaluations, giving her an objective, high-level view of what makes a partnership safe and reliable.
Her approach is grounded in a background in evolutionary biology, ensuring that every training plan is rooted in science rather than outdated techniques. Brenna is dedicated to reward-based methods and prioritizes regular continued education to keep her practices aligned with the most current behavioral research and industry standards. By bringing this program-grade expertise into a virtual space, she provides owner-trainers with the professional benchmarks and quiet confidence necessary to navigate their own journey toward independence.
